Physician Bio

We are pleased to recommend Björn Sauerwein, MD, PhD, who has been providing urologic care to the Pocatello area since 2007, combining his European training with American medical innovations. With a focus on patient-centered care, Dr. Sauerwein is dedicated to delivering high-quality, individualized treatment to the community.

A native of Marburg, Germany, Dr. Sauerwein was inspired to pursue medicine by his father, a pioneering urologist in Germany. Initially pursuing a career in chemistry, he earned a PhD from the prestigious University of Illinois. However, a postdoctoral opportunity in Cambridge, England, reignited his passion for medicine, leading him to train as a urologist in the United States. After completing a competitive urology residency in Albuquerque, Dr. Sauerwein specialized in neuro-urology at the University of North Carolina, becoming one of only 150 fellowship-trained neuro-urologists in the country.

Board-certified in urology, Dr. Sauerwein has introduced advanced technologies to Southeast Idaho, including performing the region’s first robotic prostatectomy in 2010 and founding the robotic surgery program at Portneuf Medical Center. In 2011, he established the Urology Center of Idaho, where he and his team provide personalized, high-quality urological care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Known for his empathetic approach, Dr. Sauerwein treats patients as partners, helping them understand their conditions and options in a comfortable, supportive environment.

As a father and active community member, Dr. Sauerwein and his family enjoy supporting the local arts, attending Idaho Civic Symphony performances, and contributing to various community causes. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, playing tennis, and sharing his passion for history and science with his two young sons.
